Online Multiplayer for Console Players
Online Multiplayer for Console Players
As of March 2025, console gamers are still required to pay to play online multiplayer modes for popular titles on PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles. In contrast, PC gamers enjoy daily releases with multiplayer capabilities at no additional cost.
Games like Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 force console players to purchase a subscription just to play with another controller locally. This means that even playing with a friend on the same console requires a paid subscription, which is a major disappointment.
But why does this happen? The culprit behind this trend is Microsoft, the creator of Windows and Xbox, with its monetization strategy called "Xbox Live." This strategy was first employed on the Xbox 360 in its launch year (2005) and was supported by its counterpart, the PS3, which did not require a subscription for online play at the time. However, this changed eventually, and starting with the PS4 up to the PS5 Pro, the same strategy has been maintained.
In my opinion, this is a terrible way for gaming moguls to make money. From another perspective, it's essentially paying for a second internet connection – paying for the one you already have, plus an additional one for console online play. It's a complete shame.
Unfortunately, this won't be changing anytime soon, and it's likely that this strategy will continue for years to come.
